David S. Huber Flying Fugu #8124-1760 *SOLD 8/14/24*
This pipe is not only new, it is dated 02/22, which means I am graced with the ability to post it in the month it was made, thanks to the continued good will of David, who has become one of the premier U.S. pipe makers in a relatively short while (but not without intensive training and tutorship in Denmark, where he studied with a number of the great Danish pipe makers. David Huber is serious about his craft.
There might be more detail and subtlety going on with this pipe than I can comfortably explain. I hope a photo is worth 1,000 words, but you would derive more out of it if you held the pipe in your hands. and examined it yourself. That examination should include the stem (comfortable and flat…the way I like it) and don’t overlook the extra work given to the draft opening at the end of the tenon. The great Bird’s Eye grain on the bowl sides slowly reveals itself too, as you look carefully. Maybe we’re creating an artist here. I’ll have to get more of his pipes in the future to see where this is all going…it certainly appears to be going to some pretty damned good places.
You need to know the draw is wide-open, the chamber is deep, providing good capacity and the stem material appears to be vulcanite for a comfortable mouth-feel. Interestingly, and happily, it is not uncomfortable to hold, either, right or left hand, despite the multiple design inclusions. If you like showing off your pipes (and you know who you are) this is one that will enhance your stature…at least in your own eyes. Grp. 5 size based on bowl size & capacity.
4.35” long, bowl 2.2” tall. Weight: 2 oz., 58 grams. New
