Ropp’s briar pipes seem to take inspiration from a couple of sources. One source appears to be the tall thin bowls of the Pipe Dan group. There seems to be too many such shapes to be coincidence, although there’s nothing to say they couldn’t have decided on these designs on their own. The other inspiration is the forward canted Pear or Egg shapes of the old clay churchwardens. This connection, I think, can’t readily be denied. This piece certainly harkens to those old clays. Because of the thin shape of the bowl, and narrow chamber, this might be a Grp. 2 in terms of tobacco capacity, but it’s not a tiny pipe, but long and thin. The condition is excellent, and it has a bone stem, which has a decent, if not wide-open, draw.
