2001 Dunhill Group 3 Cumberland #81723-4942KK *SOLD 9/18/23*

$165.00

Produced during the era when the Cumberland was produced without that attractive, smooth, complementary rim. And there’s a story that goes with that statement and you are now lucky enough to be able to read it…if you want. During the years of my B&M’s existence, I had a customer who was collecting, among other pipes, Dunhill Cumberlands. He came into the shop and asked if I could get for him 6 shapes in the Cumberland finish that weren’t, too his knowledge, available anywhere in the U.S. As I was on a friendly basis with the general manager of Dunhill, I made a call to Mr. Simon Glendenning, the Mgr. and asked for those 6 pipes to be made for my customer. A nice little order for the both of us. Simon said he would do it for me, but, he said, “the Cumberland no longer has that smooth rim.” My response was immediate, if not particularly gracious: “what f…ing moron changed the style of Dunhill’s most popular model?” When a 3 or 4 second pause ensued, I knew the answer. “Myself and Richard Dunhill,” Simon said, “but for you and your customer we will produce those 6 pipes in the old style.” Which he did, and eventually, the correctness of my vision was realized and the Cumberland again has that smooth rim to complement the brindle stem (often called a cumberland stem…which irritates my old business partner David Field because it a bowling ball, or brindle stem and owes nothing to having been made in Dunhill’s Cumberland Street address anymore than does their black, vulcanite stem. This pipe does not have a smooth rim, but on the other hand it is in excellent condition, with a crisp, clean rim and a mark-free stem. The draw is open and it passes the cleaner test. As stated in the headline, it is a Grp. 3 in size. Used.
5.75” long, bowl 1.4” tall. Weight: 1 1/8 oz., 33 grams.
