1961 Dunhill Shell #817-5367 *SOLD 11/9/23*

$325.00

The shape of this pipe might generate more of a political than a pipe discussion. I grew up in the pipe world calling this am Oom-Paul, which referred to Paul Kruger, the architect of much of the Republic of South Africa’s horrible apartheid policies. He is, of course, much dishonored now and it’s almost a sin to call this shape an Oom-Paul, although I really don’t feel in my bones that it is disrespectful of all those that suffered under that appalling regime to do so. Maybe it is and I’m insensitive. I’m sure I’d resent calling one of my favorite shapes, the Prince, a Hitler. So, let’s be politically correct, which term is used as a pejorative, although as I have just pointed out, being politically correct is often simply being polite and considerate of the feelings of others…there is a balance to be achieved, of course…and call this a Hungarian. Hooray for the Hungarian people, and we’re happy to name a great pipe after you all, although we’ll never learn to speak your non-Indo-Aryan based language. My favorite year for Dunhills (solely because that’s the year I managed to get my impoverished hands on one…they are phenomenally good smokers) is 1961. And this piece is in excellent condition, with a crisp inner rim, no marks on the stem, top or bottom, an open draw and a pretty decent sandblast along with clean, clear nomenclature. I might ask the purchaser to allow me to give it just one smoke with a latakia blend before sending it out into the world to make it just a tinier bit better place. It says Grp. 4 on the bottom. Seems larger than that to me. Used.
3.8” long, bowl 2.35” tall. Weight: 2 1/8 oz., 62 grams.
