Here’s a little cutie. It’s only a Grp. 2 size but it qualifies as a Grp. 3 if you use Dunhill’s own size template. Handsome Bird’s Eye on one side of the bowl and flame grain on the bowl’s other side. The condition is very good. No marks on the stem and no wear on the rim, although you can see the remainder of some carbon residue, but not even enough of that to be concerned. The nomenclature is weak, I’ll say that, but I don’t think, judging from the pipe’s condition, that it comes from having been buffed down, but rather is the result of less than vigorous original stamping. Everything is certainly legible. 1961s don’t show up often, so if you’re looking for a birth year pipe, would it kill you to get this one just in case, and if something bigger turns up, get that one too, or are you so henpecked that the purchase of two pipes in a decade will jeopardize the marriage? Just askin.
