Charatan Special #32124-7419
Charatan Special #32124-7419
When there is no “L” stamped on the shank, I have to write reams of prose to try to educate the uninitiated into the very obvious, quickly recognized, differences between true Charatan era pipes and their later iteration when the name was taken over by Dunhill. It’s a pain in the ass. This is clearly a true Charatan. For the experienced, a quick glance is enough to establish that fact. But to get down to details, this pipe’s “CP” logo has the bottom hook of the “C” going into the loop of the “P.” (Although that “CP’s” white part is buffed off. Further, the DC (Double Comfort) vulcanite stem has registration number on it. The cross grain on a Special is also a giveaway. BTW, did the newer, smooth Charatans have fills? If so, this one does not have any fills. All that being said, I still have to price the pipe lower than I would if it had that “L”. That pisses me off, too, of course. It’s a large pipe, Grp. 6 size, and true to classic Pot dimensions, the bowl is wider than it is high. The condition is very good; I see one little spot where there is wear on the inner rim. The stem has no marks at all. The draw is wide-open.
6 1/8” long, bowl 1.7” tall. Weight: 2 oz., 58 grams.
