Champ of Denmark #9424-9362

$55.00

Champ pipes, according to Pipedia, were made for and distributed by Larsen & Stigart and in the U.S. by Dunhill (or would that be Lane Ltd., who distributed Dunhill, Charatan, Ben Wade, and others?). In that mix, according to Pipedia, was Karl Erik, who produced, and maybe still produces, lots of Danish Freehands. Among their carvers, in house apparently, was Søren Eric Andersen. Not only was Søren an excellent pipe maker, with many credits to his name, but he was a frequent correspondent here and extremely helpful in identifying the makers and origins of many Danish pipes in our possession, thanks to his association with just about every important Danish pipe maker and pipe-selling house. I think he made some pipes for me, too, or at least provided some that he had on hand and that we could sell for very favorable prices. He often had not only beautifully carved pipes, but those with great grain patterns, too. He was also a very creative man in other areas of the crafts, including, if I correctly recall his emails, painting. Then, sadly, he dropped out of view, or, as is typical with me, I failed to correspond frequently enough. I think he was beginning to have health problems, too. I hope he is OK; it's been some years now.
This Champ is in very good condition, with only a little residue of carbon on the inner rim of the chamber. The stem is mark-free, the draw is open and it passes the cleaner test (although if I would get off my ass and get a straight cleaner it would doubtless work even better). I'll it a Grp. 6 size, although with such a tall bowl, it's hard to be precise.
7.25" long, bowl 3.6" tall. Weight: 2 3/8 oz., 69 grams.
